"Taza Pir" Mosque

In the summer of 1904  the official decision of Baku City Duma  has been announced on Financing the construction of the Taza Pir Mosque by one of the richest women of Ashur khan family Nabat Khanum Ashurbeyova.  In the decision there were stressed especially the idea of building the Taza Pir Mosque provided the expenses of bride-money donated her. Nabat Khanum particularly paid attention of being Azeri  the architect of the mosque planned to be built in the future. The purpose of the assignment was to get acquainted with the architecture of the famous mosques. Construction of Tezepir Mosque started in 1905, the day of the Mabas holiday. Nabat Khanum’s son adequately fulfilled his mother’s will and he was buried in the courtyard of the mosque. The construction of the mosque was completed, the last stone is empowered to Zeynalabdin Tagiyev put in the middle of a large dome. The construction ended in 1914 of  Taza Pir Mosque is a first religious building built of white stones. Taza Pir Mosque was  completely a new stage not only in the urban structure in Baku, but also in the religious buildings of all Absheron for its spatial unity and architectural feature. The main facade of the mosque crowned three-wide porch, raised minarets and domes solemn symmetrical composition in the form of wings have been resolved. In a different times of our history, march genocide days, bolshevic regime, struggle for national liberation increased the role as a religious center of Taza Pir Mosque. The funerals of the people fired by soviet army were decided to bury them  in cemetery in which the 1918 March massacre victims were buried. The reconstruction project based  on  instructions of President Ilham Aliyev in 2005  was prepared to restore the mosque and surrounding areas. The architectural works of the project assigned to A.Mammadov, restoration assigned to F.Miralayev and  interior design assigned to E.Mikailov. The awkward single-storey buildings were destroyed and in place of it there were built 3 large crops with 5 storey-buildings for the educational buildings of the Caucasus Muslim administrative office and Baku Islam University. On July 6, 2009, after renovation and construction works the grand opening ceremony was held with the participation of President Ilham Aliyev.
